Achieving Successful Market Access in Medicaid Managed Care: A Dialog with MMC Executives

As System Director of Managed Care Pharmacy Service, Ms. Miller oversees the clinical, operational and PBM pharmacy services at Geisinger Health Plan. Geisinger Health Plan serves approximately 560,000 members in 43 counties throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania and offers Commercial, Marketplace, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and Employer group plans. Geisinger is one of the largest integrated health systems in the United states serving millions of residents throughout Pennsylvania. Geisinger is widely recognized and has repeatedly garnered national accolades for integration, quality, and service.
Ms. Miller’s team at Geisinger Health Plan includes >70 FTEs comprised of pharmacists, nurses, auditors, data analysts, and other support personnel. During her tenure as director with the pharmacy department, she along with her team implemented many changes including a new Pharmacy Benefit Manager, a new Medicaid line of business, an electronic prior authorization system, and new retail, mail order, and specialty networks. These changes have contributed to the Health Plan’s revenue of $3.2 billion.
Ms. Miller and team have also made great strides in improving STAR ratings by implementing outreach calls to members, IVR refill reminders, and benefit changes that encourage mail order utilization which have resulted in as much as a 10 basis point improvement in Part D STAR adherence measures.
Ms. Miller has extensive experience in pharmacy operations and has been with Geisinger since 2011. Before becoming director in 2014, she was the Medicare Part D Pharmacist for GHP where she was responsible for the Medicare formulary. Ms. Miller previously held positions as the pharmacy director at Lock Haven Hospital and Sunbury Community Hospital, was a Chief Pharmacist within the federal prison system, and has garnered vast retail and hospital experience.
Ms. Miller received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She currently holds licenses in four states including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and New Hampshire.
The South Carolina Pharmacy Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Continuing education credits will be available to participants who fully attend the program and then complete an online educational activity evaluation. A unique code given at each activity must be provided in the evaluation to receive credit. Grievances regarding the education program must be submitted in writing to the SCPhA ACPE Administrator immediately following the program.
